In the world of fantasy fiction, it's so easy to copy old formulas. Find a person in your mind, give them a random name (make sure and use the letters 'a' and 'y' a lot), throw a tunic on them, and start the story in a forest, and somehow you get from there to Lord of the Rings. Well, a lot can dream about this happening, but it almost never does. Edwin has achieved something that others lack, he has stuck to some of the rules and norms of fantasy writing, but made it fresh and new.Is there the beginning of an epic journey? Yes. Is there a hint of magic and possibly other worlds? Yes. Is there intrigue and doubt as to the motive and true nature of some characters? Absolutely. Does Edwin answer these questions for us? No! Instead of trying to complete the story and give us closure, he gave us just enough to go one, and just enough to be attached to the main characters, that we can dream again of what might be in future sequels.
I encourage Edwin to press on and write more. Keep them short yet engrossing like this and you've got a long time fan. Thanks!

Great start to a new series. If you're a fan of fantasy this book is for you. I liken it to Patrick Rothfuss "The Name of the Wind". Wonderful character development, tense plotting and exciting action scenes. Looking forward to book two.
Get this book and be one of the first to say you read it 'when'. . . Thoroughly enjoyed this first effort. Well developed characters and storyline make it hard to put down. Very much looking forward to the second installment, hopefully sooner than later.
Finishing this first part.. How much wait for sequel? It's really interesting story, wonderful (yes, wonder in fantasy ) ) characters. beautiful descriptions.. I like it so much. Highly recommended!
Debut novel, "Uprooted," by Edwin Hanks, starts the reader off on a fantasy based quest in the intriguing world of Orinthia; a place with a long and violent past and unresolved conflicts that shape the events pushing the characters along. What starts out as normal day of play amongst two brothers leads to a frenzied escape from the town after their discovery of a dead body holding items with magical properties threatens the tranquility of their village by unleashing forces intent on killing them. Fleeing the village in just the nick of time and with their pursuers hot on their heels, the two boys, assisted by their father and the stoic warden of the barony, work their way along a mountainous path to a neighboring village. Along the way, the boys begin to work out some of the mystery surrounding their situation whilst rapidly maturing into adults when faced with life or death encounters. Volume 1 ends with the tension heating up as their pursuers regroup and the boys reach the edges of the next village.
"Uprooted" does a nice job of slowly revealing more history and information about the world, unveiling a culture of various factions, political intrigue, military capabilities, and complexity. There is also a growing sense of danger and mystery that makes the story more compelling as it progresses. Not a hard read at all, the book is very well suited for young adult readers who may find points of empathy with the two boys and their feelings of powerlessness, fear, courage, overcoming challenges, and even one boy’s fumbling attempts at expressing romantic feelings for a girl in the village.
As a first novel, the story does contain a few places where the dialogue comes across as forced and the pacing for the first half of the book drags in comparison to the action and intrigue of the second half. When the body count starts to pile up, the seriousness of the boy’s plight gets driven home emphatically. The author does a fine job of creating moral ambiguity into the thoughts of some of the antagonists, making the conflict more compelling than a straight good vs. evil struggle, but fails to imbue some of the protagonists with the same degree of doubts and moral relativism. While the elder of the two boys does question the various religious beliefs he’s encountered, neither their father nor the warden had much in the way of complexity, coming across as just overall good guys. This is not a serious issue and can easily be rectified in the following volumes if the author chooses to do so.
Still, none of this should detract from a fine effort. Uprooted is a story that becomes more and more compelling as it continues and the historical tidbits doled out throughout the book help to paint a world that the reader wants to get to know better. And, ultimately, the book achieves something most important – it makes the reader hungry for the next volume.
“Uprooted” is the story of a pair of brothers who are forced to leave their home after they discover a decaying body in the woods near their home. The body was in possession of an amulet that the boy’s village fears will draw the attention of “The Jackals,” who are always on the hunt to eliminate the use of magic.
I found “Uprooted” to be a quick and easy read. This isn’t the kind of fantasy novel that has a sword fight on every page, it’s more of a meditation on rural life and family. At times, I could imagine the characters involved were attempting to build a life on the American frontier rather than occupying the pages of a fantasy novel. I actually enjoyed this component because it lent the novel a sense of realism.
Edwin is a gifted storyteller and there are some very good scenes in this book which display a keen grasp of character development. I especially enjoyed a chapter where a young boy goes to profess his love to an indifferent girl. The scene was not overdone and the boy learns a few things that echo in his actions for the rest of the novel. It’s good to see moments in a novel where actions have consequences. This is what people mean when they say “the characters need to grow and change.”
I was kind of looking forward to a little more action early on, and at times it was hard to identify who the main characters were going to be. There are a lot of characters in this novel, which indicates that this is a rich and fully developed world. I did eventually get my answers, and overall this is a compelling start to a new series. This is a well-crafted, professional novel. The editing is good, the cover design is good, and I’m looking forward to more entries in this series.
